I like to go out for a walk or bike ride right around sunrise. One morning I left early and it was still a little dark outside. The temperature was cool and I wore a hoody. I live in a reasonably safe neighborhood and don’t usually think much about safety. As I approached an intersection, a young woman crossed my path, heading in the same direction I was planning to go. When I reached the corner, she glanced over her shoulder. It occurred to me then that I might not look like the boring middle aged software developer that I am. At that moment, I made the decision to put her at ease, despite not knowing how she felt. I turned and went in a different direction.
